Art Quilts Heres an opportunity if you have a sewing machine sitting idle .... perhaps you are a collector of fabrics, threads and paints. Lets have some one on one fun with your machine. Contact me to organise a fun day.
Quilts have been made from the beginning of time and in a variety of ways for a variety of purposes in almost every culture. Quilted fabric has been found in archeological findings in the ancient societies of Egypt, India and Mesopotamia. The making of a quilt can bring together beauty and practicality, as well as history, community and culture. The process of making a quilt involves skill, time and patience on the part of the individual. Art Quilts are not stitched for warmth, but to be enjoyed both in domestic and commercial domains as a piece of art. Work may balance painterly and quilterly influences and display ideas of whimsy, serious social and political commentary or intimate personal statements and remembrances. Many quilt artists dye their own cloth and quilt their own work. Quilted stitch lines add depth and detail to the quilt. These lines may be achieved by hand or sewing machine. Textiles is the perfect medium to create unity of colour and texture, and provide the viewer with new surfaces and structures to contemplate. My art quilt images show a range of styles, from improvisional style to works that make the viewer reflect on a topic and may even make the viewer feel uncomfortable (see Fire in the House Window quilt).
